The BBC’s iPlayer volume goes to 11… what don’t you understand about that?

Saturday, July 5, 2008

I know we’re all busy, but are we too busy to notice that the volume on the Flash video player the BBC uses actually goes to 11? Since I’m almost positive there’s no reasonable explanation for this, I can only assume it’s an homage to Spinal Tap — which is totally bodacious. Seriously, check it out.

I’m convinced that media players that go all the up to 11 are the way forward. This proves that the BBC are so far ahead of the game right now.

Why don’t they just make ten louder and make ten be the top number and make that a little louder?

    Mark,

No, you don’t get it. This control is one more than 10. It goes up to 11. D’you see? One better than 10. 1 louder.

Actually it does have a function. Digital 100% volume is the maximum at which no matter what the stored audio is, it’s not going to distort. 11 gives you a little extra welly, at the expense of distorting on loud passages, which thankfully seldom happens. And yes it obviously comes from Spinal Tap ; )

I have a valid question at this point..Are we still going to do Stonehenge tonight ?
